The DomQuartier is a unique cultural highlight in the heart of Salzburg City. In the magnificent state rooms, history comes alive, while a museum tour also allows you to enjoy imposing views of the city itself.<\/p>

One entrance ticket \u2013\u00a0four Salzburg museums<\/div>

The architectural complex we know today as the DomQuartier comprises the Cathedral and the Residenz \u2013 once the center of the prince-archbishops\u2019 power \u2013 along with Benedictine St. Peter\u2019s Abbey. With a single entrance ticket, visitors have the opportunity to marvel at\u00a0four different Salzburg museums. The historical rooms of the DomQuartier also house various collections focused especially on the Baroque history of the city.<\/p>

A walking tour of the DomQuartier<\/div>

The starting point for your tour of the DomQuartier are the baroque state rooms of the Alte Residenz. Housed on the upper floor of the former official residence of the prince-archbishops is the extraordinary Residenz Gallery, where visitors can admire impressive artworks by European painters from the 16th to 19th centuries. In addition, the terrace above the Cathedral Arches reveals breathtaking views of the Salzburg historic district as well as the city mountains.<\/p>

A walking tour of the DomQuartier continues through the rooms of the Cathedral\u2019s Northern Oratory, rooms that are decorated with elaborate stuccowork. These spaces are mostly used for special exhibitions. There is no more spectacular place to marvel at the magnificent interior of the cathedral than the organ loft. The Southern Oratory, for its part, is home to the Cathedral Museum. Displayed there are artworks from the Gothic to Baroque periods, pieces that originate both from the Cathedral itself as well as other churches in the Salzburg Archdiocese.<\/p>

Visits to the DomQuartier then continue through the Cabinet of Curiosities and the Long Gallery. The tour ends at St. Peter\u2019s Museum, which presents sacred treasures and artistic masterpieces from the collections of St. Peter\u2019s Archabbey.<\/p>

Guidobald Graf von Thun and the DomQuartier<\/div>

Prince-archbishop Wolf Dietrich was substantially responsible for the Baroque historical district of Salzburg which we know and love today. \u00a0As for the rooms of today\u2019s DomQuartier, we would be remiss not to also mention prince-archbishop Guidobald Graf von Thun. While in power (1654 \u2013 1668), by building the cathedral arches, the Residenz- and Cathedral Squares as well as today\u2019s \u201cLong Gallery\u201d he essentially created the basis for this new museum\u00a0tour<\/a>.<\/p>
