In Spain there are more than 15,600 monuments, archaeological sites, gardens, and historical complexes that have been declared Properties of Cultural Interest (BIC). It\u2019s a rich, diverse heritage that\u2019s extraordinarily valuable, and remains from the\u00a0different civilisations, cultures, and historical eras<\/a>\u00a0that evolved on Spanish territory have been preserved: from Iberians and Celts to Romans and Arabs as well as Phoenicians, Greeks, and Visigoths who all left their mark. Within this mix unique artistic styles are also to be found, such as\u00a0Asturian pre-Romanesque<\/a>,\u00a0Mudejar architecture<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Andalus\u00ed art<\/a>. So it\u2019s no surprise that Spain is the country with the fourth largest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world. From the cave paintings at the\u00a0Altmira Cave<\/a>\u00a0and the findings at\u00a0Atapuerca<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0Segovia Aqueduct<\/a>,\u00a0the Alhambra Palace in Granada<\/a>, and the\u00a0Great Mosque of C\u00f3rdoba<\/a>, to the cathedrals of\u00a0Seville<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Burgos<\/a>, and the\u00a0Sagrada Familia<\/a>\u00a0in Barcelona. Spain’s museums<\/a>\u00a0house some of the most important collections in the world, and are home to some exceptional works and true masterpieces. And if you want to get to know artists such as\u00a0Vel\u00e1zquez, Goya, Dal\u00ed, Mir\u00f3 or Picasso<\/a>, they\u2019re not to be missed. In Madrid the \u2018Art Walk\u2019 comprising the\u00a0Prado Museum<\/a>, the\u00a0Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Reina Sof\u00eda National Museum<\/a>, takes you on a journey through the history of art up to the present day. Contemporary art takes centre stage at places like\u00a0Bilbao\u2019s Guggenheim Museum\u00a0<\/a>, the\u00a0MACBA<\/a>\u00a0in Barcelona, the\u00a0IVAM<\/a>\u00a0in Valencia and\u00a0M\u00e1laga\u2019s Centro Pompidou<\/a>. Cultural routes<\/h2>\n

Of all the many cultural routes in Spain, there is one that really stands out, and that has its own name: the\u00a0Way of St James<\/a>. The oldest pilgrim route in Europe, year after year it continues to attract thousands of travellers from all over the world, and has been awarded World Heritage status by UNESCO. Another great cultural route is the\u00a0V\u00eda de la Plata<\/a>\u00a0(the Silver Route) which runs from north to south, following the old Roman road of the same name. And then there are the\u00a0Legado Andalus\u00ed<\/a>\u00a0routes, which reveal the impressive legacy of al-Andalus. Together with those mentioned, there are many other routes that offer great opportunities to discover Spain\u2019s historical and cultural riches. In a country like Spain, the\u00a0calendar of events<\/a>\u00a0is another example of cultural wealth. Throughout the year there are a whole host of important music, film, theatre, literature, dance and performing arts festivals of all kinds and genres. In the major cities you\u2019ll also find big exhibitions, musical shows, and all sorts of special cultural events. Without forgetting the multitude of festivals, fairs, and popular celebrations that take place all over the country. Throughout history many Spaniards have left their distinctive mark in different artistic and cultural fields (Murillo, Zurbar\u00e1n, Mir\u00f3, Sorolla, Maruja Mallo, Cervantes, Lorca, Falla, Bu\u00f1uel, Balenciaga, Ram\u00f3n y Cajal, and many more). And today there are many who are still continuing to do so.
